On March 17, 1776, British forces are forced to evacuate Boston following General George Washington’s successful placement of fortifications and cannons on Dorchester Heights.
There was initially a question as to how to address President-Elect George Washington. The Senate proposed that he be addressed as “His Highness the President of the United States of America and Protector of their Liberties.” Both the House of Representatives and the Senate compromised on the use of “President of the United States.”
On January 12, 1777, Hugh Mercer dies from wounds received in the Battle of Princeton, on January 3, 1777.
Hugh Mercer was a soldier and physician who originally served with British forces. He later became a Brigadier General in the Continental Army and was a close friend of George Washington.
